About the role

The Communications Internship is a semester-long, hands-on paid learning experience designed for students interested in marketing, communications, digital media, or storytelling in a mission-driven organization. This internship offers meaningful, practical work in a professional environment and provides exposure to education policy communications and public engagement strategies. Interns will gain experience creating content, supporting digital campaigns, assisting with event promotion, and helping translate complex education policy topics into accessible, engaging communications for diverse audiences. Students pursuing degrees in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, education, political science, or related fields are encouraged to apply.

  • This internship is part-time (approximately 11–20 hours per week) with flexibility around academic schedules. Interns receive $15/hour, and academic credit may be arranged.
  • Preferred term: March 2026- June 2026
  • This is an onsite position. Interns are expected to work from The Hunt Institute office (5000 Centregreen Way, Suite 150, Cary, NC 27513) Onsite workdays are Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. Preference is given to students in the Triangle area, though exceptions may be considered. Interns report directly to the Internship Program Coordinator.

What you'll do

The Communications Intern will work as a member of the Communications team and may collaborate across departments. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with creating and scheduling content for social media platforms (LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
  • Support development of graphics, short-form content, and promotional materials for programs and events
  • Help draft captions, newsletters, website updates, and other written communications
  • Track engagement metrics and assist with basic analytics reporting
  • Support promotion of convenings, webinars, and policy briefings
  • Assist with photography, video, or content capture during events as needed
  • Help maintain content calendars and organize digital assets
  • Conduct light research to support storytelling and content development
  • Provide on-site support at THI events when needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Interest in communications, social media, marketing, or digital storytelling
  • Self-starter who can work independently and collaboratively
  • Attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Familiarity with major social media platforms and basic content creation tools
  • Basic graphic design experience (Canva or similar preferred)
  • Ability to synthesize information and communicate it clearly to varied audiences
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Resourceful, curious, and comfortable asking questions
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program
  • Experience with analytics tools, Adobe Creative Suite, or content management systems is a plus but not required.
