WHAT YOU’LL DO

Teach For America Massachusetts (TFA MA) seeks a skilled, strategic, and driven leader to serve as the Senior Managing Director of Program Strategy & Impact in the Massachusetts region. In this role, you will set the overall vision and strategy for our regional program and lead the growth of our impact in Massachusetts through innovative partnerships and programs. The SMD, Program Strategy & Impact will be a key member of the regional leadership team and will serve as a regional ambassador for TFA MA’s programmatic initiatives and key strategic relationships with education leaders, funders, and policymakers. As TFA MA embarks on the development of a new strategic plan, you will contribute to the development of that plan, setting a course for the next five years of programmatic impact in the region aligned with TFA’s 2030 goal of doubling the number of students who are on a path to economic mobility and success in life.

Over the next year, the SMD, Program Strategy & Impact will lead the development and implementation of a re-imagined regional program in partnership with TFA’s central program team. This program will support the growth and impact of corps members from matriculation into the region through early alumnihood. The regional program will include designing and executing corps member learning, leadership, and community-building experiences from summer practicum throughout the 2-year corps experience. The SMD, Program Strategy & Impact will be the regional point of contact for the corps member program to all TFA central team partners, and for our university, state, school, and district partners.

Last, the SMD, Program Strategy & Impact will lead the design, pilot, and scale of new high-impact programs that advance our region’s 2030 goals to double 8th-grade math outcomes and grow the footprint of TFA across the Commonwealth. The SMD, Program Strategy & Impact will be an entrepreneurial and strategic leader with a deep understanding of the challenges facing schools and the capacity to craft new programs and solutions, leveraging TFA’s core capabilities and competencies. The SMD, Program Strategy & Impact reports to the Executive Director of the Massachusetts region.

WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR

Regional Program Strategy and Execution (50%)

  • Set and manage the vision, direction, and outcomes for our local corps program, using local context, our larger arc of member experience (applicant to alumni), and the organization-wide program model. You will do this in close collaboration with the Managing Directors, Leadership Development (MD, LD), our regional staff, and our central program team, including the Senior Managing Director of Leadership Development (SMD, LD)

  • Design and execute a re-imagined regional corps member program that spans from matriculation, to pre-service (initial summer training), through the two-year corps commitment to the transition to alumni hood. Current major programming events include, but are not limited to:

  • Pre-Service (first-year corps members, before arrival in-region)

  • Practicum (summer training program, 5 sites, ~July)

  • Regional In-Year Learning Summits (~3/year)

  • Content Learning (varied approaches, with content specialists)

  • Alumni Induction (capstone for second-year corps members in May)

  • Serving as the Regional Point of Contact for the corps member program with our centralized program team, school leaders and partners, and regional staff

  • Co-managing all Managing Directors of Leadership Development (MD, LDs) in partnership with the Senior Managing Director of Leadership Development (SMD, LD)

  • Manage the Manager of Regional Program Operations (M, RPO) to oversee all operations related to our regional programming.

  • Leveraging partnerships to create a strong ecosystem of support for corps members, and leading the regional response to discrete challenges with CMs (leadership development, professionalism concerns, etc.) that arise

  • Oversee the visioning and execution of regional events that are aligned with goals, build regional corps and alumni culture, and strengthen TFA MA’s visibility.

  • Make decisions on additional regional hiring for summer pre-service, conduct interviews, and ensure strong onboarding for candidates in addition to managing non-central pre-service roles for the duration of the summer training experience for corps members.

  • Collaborate with the SMD, Talent for our region, to ensure that both current and future teacher licensing pathways support the overall development of our corps members in ways that are complementary to our universal program model and meet the needs of our participants.

  • Work in lockstep with the SMD, Talent, to ensure that all CM teaching placements maximize our abilities to make progress on our region’s 2030 goals to double 8th-grade math outcomes and grow the footprint of TFA across the Commonwealth.

Strategic Partnerships, Growth, and Innovation (30%)

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and other colleagues, set vision and direction to ensure our statewide region is delivering high-quality, relevant, and mission-centered services and partnerships beyond the corps member program

  • Assess the regional landscape and identify opportunities for TFA MA to increase its impact, and develop plans to leverage core organizational capabilities and resources (e.g., programming, alumni, strategic relationships, funding) toward new programs, initiatives, and partnerships that address key educational needs in Massachusetts

  • In partnership with the ED, assess the state, and philanthropic funding opportunities, and identify promising areas of potential new programming in alignment with funding priorities

  • Develop, pilot, test, and scale new programs, initiatives, and partnerships, and work with the ED to ensure alignment with the overall regional vision, strategy, goals, and funding

  • Craft strategies and determine key tactics for new innovative service offerings, and partner with team members to determine responsibility for the execution of offerings

  • Audit and map existing organizational partnerships and relationships, and develop a strategy and aligned priorities for expanding TFA MA’s strategic partnerships in service of our programs and goals. Identify and secure new strategic partnerships with state leaders, district leaders, funders, and/or aligned education organization leaders.

Team Leadership and Regional Stewardship (20%)

  • Serve as a member of the TFA MA senior leadership team with full ownership over regional programming and impact strategy.

  • Led the regional MA program team, which includes MD, LDs, and co-managed with the central program team lead, the SMD, LD.

  • Create a positive team culture that is focused on outcomes and growth, and is welcoming to all members, such that every team member can bring all of their talents and expertise to bear in our shared work.

  • Establish clear team expectations, annual goals, and systems and practices to monitor team and individual progress.

  • Support, attend, and/or participate in regional & cross-team activities and campaigns, including staff meetings and events

  • Participate in org-wide initiatives, including corps member matriculation and interviews.

  • Serve as an external ambassador for TFA MA, which may include but not be limited to: engaging with funders, policymakers, state and district partners, alumni, and education ecosystem leaders; and attending events, conferences, and key education meetings.

  • Identify, cultivate, and build key relationships with stakeholders across the MA education sector, and leverage these relationships to inform, shape, and grow the impact of our regional program.

YOUR EXPERIENCE

Your areas of knowledge and expertise that matter most for this role (minimum qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Minimum of 10+ years of relevant work experience, including at least 3 years in management

  • Track record of programmatic leadership and impact, including experience designing new programs and initiatives from the ground up

  • Experience with setting programmatic strategies and goals in collaboration with others

  • Ability to manage others (both vertically and laterally) to effectively track tasks, assess progress, and follow through on the execution of plans through exemplary systems for managing across a team

  • Independent self-starter with a high degree of personal responsibility and capacity for self-managing to build structure and drive results around ambiguous workstreams

  • Entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to spot new opportunities and design new programs that meet unmet needs in the MA education landscape

  • Ability to navigate uncertainty and ambiguity, and to prioritize work efforts to execute overall strategy

  • Exceptional written, oral, and visual communication skills and a desire to develop and maintain deep relationships with a variety of diverse constituents

  • Superb interpersonal skills and a strong “EQ,” with a proven ability to engage, motivate, and inspire others to action

  • Understanding of the MA education ecosystem, including deep ties to and networks in schools, districts, state agencies, funders, and nonprofit organizations

  • Knowledge of best practices and education policy, and research on a national, state, and local level

  • Ability to travel regularly (minimum 3x a month) to our core communities (Springfield, Fall River, Boston, Chelsea, Lawrence)

BONUS (preferred qualifications)

  • Master’s degree in School Administration/Leadership or another applicable area

  • Experience as a school or system-level leader

  • Experience coaching, advising, and leading capable leaders through complex challenges toward impact

  • A track record of getting results while managing multiple large-scale projects simultaneously

  • Teach For America corps member experience.

Teach For America Massachusetts launched our teaching corps in 2009 and has since grown into a diverse community of over 200 corps members and 2,600 alumni working each day on behalf of children. We work to achieve systems-level change in our five partner cities: Boston, Chelsea, Lawrence, Fall River, and Springfield. Our team operates with nuance and agility as we execute work across the Commonwealth and partner closely with our Program & Development Hubs, alongside other regions and central teams.

YOUR COMPENSATION

The applicable salary range for each U.S.-based role is based on where the employee works and is aligned to one of 3 tiers according to a cost of labor index in that geographic area. Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. The expected salary ranges for this role are set forth below. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Tier C (Massachusetts): $128,500-$171,800
