Job Description
Position Overview
The Community Outreach Specialist is a part-time, seasonal role that plays a critical role in helping KIPP NYC build strong relationships with families and communities across New York City. Serving as a key ambassador for KIPP NYC, this individual will represent the organization in the neighborhoods where our schools operate and support prospective families throughout the enrollment process.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Recruitment & Enrollment, the Community Outreach Specialist will partner closely with school-based and regional teams to increase community awareness, fill open student seats, and build a strong pipeline of prospective families and waitlists across KIPP NYC schools.

Duties and Responsibilities:
General responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
Community Outreach & Family Engagement
- Serve as a visible and positive representative of KIPP NYC within local communities
- Effectively communicate KIPP NYC’s mission, values, and school offerings to prospective families and community members
- Build authentic relationships with families, community organizations, local businesses, and neighborhood partners
- Support families throughout the application and enrollment process, ensuring a welcoming and responsive experience
Recruitment & Enrollment Support
- Conduct weekly outreach in assigned recruitment areas through:
- Door-to-door canvassing
- Flyering local businesses and community spaces
- Tabling at high-traffic locations and community events
- Outreach to local organizations and community groups
- Virtual outreach and phone banking as needed
- Assist in filling open student seats and maintaining robust waitlists across KIPP NYC schools
- Maintain accurate records of family interactions, outreach efforts, and recruitment data
Event Support & Collaboration
- Support planning and execution of family-facing recruitment and enrollment events
- Partner with school-based staff and the Student Recruitment & Enrollment (SRE) team to align outreach efforts with enrollment goals
- Attend team meetings and contribute feedback, insights, and ideas to strengthen outreach strategy
- Stay informed about local community events, neighborhood dynamics, and the broader NYC education landscape to identify opportunities for engagement
Administrative Responsibilities
- Conduct follow-up calls and communication with prospective and newly enrolled families
- Accurately enter and maintain family contact information and outreach data
- Submit regular reports and updates to the Student Recruitment & Enrollment team
- Support additional recruitment and operational projects as needed
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to travel throughout the Bronx, Brooklyn, and/or Manhattan
- Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time and carry recruitment materials as needed
- Flexibility to work afternoons, evenings, and weekends based on recruitment and event schedules
- Fluent in Spanish strongly preferred
- Previous experience in community outreach, customer service, recruitment, sales, education, or family engagement preferred
- Strong alignment with KIPP NYC’s mission and belief in the power of education and family partnership
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
- Ability to build trust and credibility with individuals from diverse backgrounds and communities
- Comfort navigating sensitive conversations with empathy, professionalism, and discretion
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Comfortable using technology, including laptops, cell phones, and data tracking systems
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently

Additional Information
Compensation and Benefits:
KIPP NYC offers a hourly rate ranging from $21/hour - $25/hour. Hourly rates at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual hourly rates are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience relevant to the role and scope of responsibilities, and are benchmarked against others within the same salary band.

This is a part-time, in-person role based in New York City and will require travel to our schools. If you are not in a school-based position, the cadence and frequency of travel to schools is determined by your leadership team. If you relocate outside of a commutable distance or out of the state of NY, your employment will be subject to review, which may include separation from KIPP NYC. It is important that you notify HR if you move or have plans to relocate.
