Job Description
The Custodian is responsible for performing housekeeping, general cleaning, and other assigned tasks as required to maintain the cleanliness and safety of the school building and grounds. As a key member of the statewide Facilities team, the Custodian will report to the Campus Facilities Manager. This position is a full time position with a requirement to work the occasional night/weekend. This role furthers the mission of KIPP Texas by providing a clean, maintained and safe learning environment for students and faculty.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Daily Operations
Open and secure facilities, including unlocking doors, disabling/enabling the alarm system, and verifying that HVAC and lighting systems are operational
Perform general cleaning duties: sweeping, mopping, window cleaning, restroom sanitation and restocking, whiteboard cleaning, drinking fountain upkeep, and trash removal
Pick up litter on school grounds and athletic fields
Complete daily laundry tasks (mop heads, towels, etc.)
Respond promptly to emergency cleanup situations
Equipment
Operate, clean, and maintain equipment (mops, buckets, auto-scrubber, etc.)
Perform floor care including stripping, waxing, sealing, and carpet stain extraction
Handle minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, swapping air filters, and touch-up painting
Learn and monitor key building systems, including fire alarm, security, main shutoffs, and electrical breakers
Campus Support
Move and rearrange furniture; assist with meal setup as needed
Assist with cleaning of campus vehicles, if applicable
Check in weekly with supervisor(s) to report supply needs, cleaning concerns, and equipment issues
Attend required team meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Basic reading and writing skills
0-2 years of housekeeping or janitorial experience; school setting preferred
COMPETENCY AND SKILLS:
Strong work ethic with a genuine commitment to maintaining a clean, safe campus
Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Detail-oriented, self, directed, and solutions-focused
Physically able to lift and carry 20-50 lbs
Good manual dexterity
Strong verbal communication skills
Customer-service mindset with a resourceful, can-do attitude
Willingness to learn building systems and new techniques
Basic computer skills preferred
English fluency preferred but not required

Reliable transportation is needed for travel between campuses
Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
Work with frequent interruptions.
Work Environment:
Hybrid work - Reports to the central office or schools three days a week
Travel Requirements:
Minimal travel: May travel to other school sites or regional offices for professional learning, meetings and other work related activities.
