Job Description

About the Elementary Recess Aide Role

Recess Aides primarily provide general supervision of elementary-aged children during outdoor (or indoor) recess, helping to ensure that recess is a safe, joyful experience for students. Candidates for this position should enjoy engaging with children and have some experience supporting children in school, after/before school, summer camp, and/or daycare settings. Recess Monitor must be all weekdays; hours vary a bit by school, but typically include mid-morning to afternoon hours (10:00am-2:00pm or 11:00am-3:00pm).

Key Responsibilities

Provide quality supervision of children, including but not limited to:

  • Providing children with clear directions and expectations, upholding and reinforcing schoolwide behavior systems

  • Positively redirecting students who are struggling to meet behavior expectations to get them back on track quickly

  • Creating opportunities for collaborative play (organizing or facilitating games, suggesting activities, etc.) while maintaining supervision of whole group

  • Ensuring children are able to enjoy a recess free from bullying

  • Communicating with school-based staff regarding any student concerns or recess needs

  • Bringing out play equipment and ensure the play yard is tidied up after recess

  • Other relevant duties as assigned by the School Principal

Qualifications

  • Love and see the high potential of all children

  • Experience working with children in school, childcare or enrichment settings

  • Ability to quickly build relationships and rapport with children and uphold high expectations in a warm but clear and direct manner

  • Flexible, team-player committed to ensuring a positive, joyful experience for students

  • Complete all required criminal and child abuse background checks:

  • PA State Police Clearance

  • PA Child Abuse Clearance

  • Cogent Federal Fingerprinting

Compensation

  • Recess Aides are compensated at $15.00 per hour and typically work 20 hours/week
