Salary Range: $100,000 - $140,000

Hybrid Schedule: Three in-office days and two remote days, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional special events outside regular hours.

Position:
The Director of Human Resources & Administration serves as the senior leader responsible for designing, implementing, and continuously improving Generation Hope’s people, culture, and administrative systems. This role provides organization-wide leadership across human resources, talent development, compliance, and administrative operations to ensure Generation Hope attracts, develops, and retains a high-performing, values-aligned, and diverse workforce.
Reporting to the Vice President of Strategy & Operations, the Director is a key thought partner in translating organizational strategy into effective people systems, operational practices, and scalable infrastructure across Generation Hope’s multi-site footprint. The Director plays a critical leadership role in organizational planning, cross-functional coordination, and institutional decision-making, working closely with senior leaders to align workforce strategy with programmatic, policy, and growth priorities.
The Director leads HR and administrative strategy, manages administrative staff, oversees HR systems and vendors, and ensures compliance, equity, and operational excellence across all sites.
Job Description:
Candidate Recruitment, Hiring, and On-Boarding
- Develop and implement targeted recruitment strategies to ensure a strong, and diverse and mission aligned applicant pool for all openings.
- Oversee and manage the full hiring lifecycle, including job postings, interview coordination, candidate communication, selection processes, and offer execution.
- Design, implement, and deliver standardized onboarding services and orientation experiences that are engaging, consistent, and aligned across departments and sites.
- Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing management of Generation Hope’s organization-wide internship program, including onboarding and supervision standards.
Professional Development and Performance Management
- Train, coach, and advise managers on hiring, performance evaluation, promotion, discipline, termination, and other employee relations matters.
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Generation Hope’s performance management framework.
- Partner with managers to maintain accurate, up-to-date job descriptions and implement a regular job review and update process.
- Design and facilitate internal staff trainings and identify relevant external professional development opportunities.
- Lead organization-wide employee engagement and retention initiatives, including staff feedback mechanisms and workplace culture assessments to strengthen culture and reduce turnover.
Compensation, Benefits/Payroll Administration
- Execute and administer all payroll functions, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant payroll processing across all Generation Hope locations.
- Administer employee benefits programs, including enrollment, changes, terminations, and compliance with applicable regulations.
- Lead benefits renewal negotiations to balance quality coverage with fiscal responsibility.
- Monitor payroll, benefits, and retirement reports to ensure accuracy, resolve, discrepancies, and maintain strong internal controls. Serve as the staff lead for all 403(b) retirement plan administration, coordinating with the organization’s third-party administrator.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive benefits materials and provide ongoing education to staff regarding current benefits offerings.
General HR Administration and Systems
- Interpret, and ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
- Manage and maintain HRIS systems to include BambooHR.
- Review current HR systems, exploring and ultimately implementing new systems based on organizational needs.
- Ensure consistent interpretation, enforcement, and application of HR policies and procedures across the organization, exercising sound judgment and decision-making authority.
- Manage employee relations matters, including internal investigations, disciplinary processes, and corrective action, in coordination with leadership and legal counsel as appropriate.
- Develop and maintain HR metrics and reporting related to hiring, retention, compensation, performance management, payroll, and benefits to inform leadership decision-making.
Office Administration
- Ensure the Administrative Coordinator is working closely with all third-party vendors, to include the IT helpdesk, technology maintenance, and security system providers.
- Support the planning and budgeting process for IT purchases and upgrades.
- Develop and maintain DC office security protocols.
- Work with the Vice President of Family Programming to ensure efficient and secure office procedures are in place at all Generation Hope sites.
Organizational Leadership
- Manage the Administrative Coordinator and additionally hired team members, holding team members accountable for stellar performance and upholding Generation Hope's values.
- Partner with senior leadership to support workforce planning, staffing models, and organizational design aligned with Generation Hope’s strategic growth and multi-site operations.
- Create systems for regularly gauging the morale of the Administrative team and plan regular activities, including an annual retreat, that keep the team uplifted. Hold weekly coaching/check-in meetings with direct reports, and develop and implement a system to evaluate the skills, experience, and professional development needs of the Administrative staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to Generation Hope’s mission.
- Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred, in a related field such as Human Resources or Organizational Psychology.
- Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive human resources leadership experience, with demonstrated breadth across HR generalist functions.
- Certifications: SHRM certification required.
- At least five years of supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated experience leading HR department(s) through strategic and transactional change.
- Experience with employee relations.
- Ability to meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated initiative in determining new or modifying existing HR policies and procedures and effectively communicating them to staff and Board members.
- Demonstrated organizational leadership and decision-making capability collaboratively at a senior management level.
- Ability to communicate to staff and Board members the short and long-term impact, specific and strategic, of HR policy and procedures.
- Ability to manage budgets and experience working closely with the COO to achieve team financial goals.
- Excellent verbal and organizational written communication skills, including editing skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to achieve goals and align interests through cooperation and collaboration with other groups and cross-functional teams, even where no direct reporting relationship exists.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive matters.
- Experience with Monday.com, ADP, BambooHR, and Google products, including Google Sheets, Word, Slides (or PowerPoint), a plus
- Personal and professional commitment to understanding and dismantling systemic racism.
Physical Demands:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
Work Environment:
- Normal office environment. Some work will take place off-site during special events.
Travel:
- This position requires national, overnight travel approximately 10% of the time for activities such as meetings and events in and out of the DC Metro area.
- Must be able to travel (via plane, train, or car).
