About the Role

Reporting to the Senior Managing Director - People, the Associate Director of Payroll assists in the processing of semi-monthly payrolls for Ascend Charter Schools, Ascend Learning and interfacing with Ascend’s Human Resources systems and payroll systems to meet business needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and coordinate the processing of semi-monthly payrolls across Ascend Charter Schools and Ascend Learning in partnership with the Payroll Manager.
  • Ensure accurate payroll processing, tax filings, benefit deductions, and leave tracking in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with People Operations and Finance to maintain data integrity and consistency across Dayforce (HRIS) and payroll systems.
  • Assist in identifying and implementing system enhancements that improve the efficiency and accuracy of payroll and HRIS operations.
  • Maintain and update employee data within the HRIS, and assist in generating routine and ad hoc reports as needed.
  • Respond to staff and school-based inquiries about payroll, timekeeping, and HRIS issues in a timely and service-oriented manner.
  • Support the administration of the organization’s retirement plans, ensuring timely contributions and data submissions for audits and filings.
  • Document payroll and HRIS procedures, and assist in troubleshooting issues as they arise.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • At least 4 years of relevant experience in payroll processing and/or HRIS support
  • Experience in an HR or People Operations function preferred
  • Nonprofit or education sector experience is a plus
  • Strong proficiency in Excel and comfort working with HRIS platforms (Dayforce preferred)
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in handling sensitive employee data
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Strong customer service mindset and team orientation
  • High level of discretion, professionalism, and integrity
  • Commitment to Ascend’s mission and values, and a belief in the power of education to transform lives

Benefits

Compensation and Benefits

The salary will range between $90,000 - $115,000 annually, commensurate with the level of experience.

This full-time, exempt position offers a comprehensive benefits package including:

Location & Work Arrangement

Based in our Brooklyn, NY office

A hybrid work schedule requiring in-office presence at least three days per week.
